What is a “Cel”? - An animation cel is a traditional method of animation art - a subject is first inked on the obverse of a transparent medium (celluloid, where “cel” comes from), then is coloured with paint on the reverse. The result is a piece of art, unlike any traditional canvas painting or drawing or print; a piece that has a uniquely smooth, uniform, and “cartoony” appearance.
